Biography
Lizdanelly López Chiclana is a Puerto Rican doctoral student in the Department of Comparative Literature who specializes in translation theory. She hopes to explore questions of untranslatability, particularly who or what gets labeled untranslatable and the political and ideological work that the label performs. Before coming to Yale, Lizdanelly graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University with a B.A. in Philosophy and Hispanic Studies with an Anthropology specialization. She completed an honors thesis titled La ética, los límites y el uso de la bastardilla en la traducción literaria. Her thesis examined the use of italics in literary translation and its ethical, political, and philosophical dimensions. Drawing on Adorno and Horkheimer’s theory of the Culture Industry, her work situates the use of italics in literary translation within the material conditions of capitalism that have long dictated American cultural production.
