READING DENNING WITH DENNING

Michael is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of American Studies, Professor of English, and Professor of Ethnicity, Race, & Migration at Yale. His books include Mechanic Accents: Dime Novels and Working-Class Culture in America (1987), The Cultural Front: The Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century (1996), and Noise Uprising: The Audiopolitics of a World Musical Revolution (2015). At Yale, Michael has coordinated the Working Group on Globalization and Culture, advised generations of graduate and undergraduate students, and consistently championed student and worker organizing. He is one of the foremost cultural critics and left intellectuals in the United States, and the evening offers a rare opportunity to discuss Michael’s work, career, and thoughts on the situation of the left in the US and beyond today.

In preparation for the event, we recommend that people read at least two (and more if you would like, of course!).

The readings include:

The Introduction to Cover Stories: Narrative and Ideology in the British Spy Thriller (1987)

“Waiting for Lefty,” from The Cultural Front: The Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century (1996)

“The Novelists’ International,” from Culture in the Age of Three Worlds (2004)

“The Mysteries of Capital,” from Amerikastudien (62:4, 2017)

Space is limited, but the event is open and all are welcome. Please bring your thoughts and questions–or just come to listen! Refreshments will be provided.
