“Oh, if only you knew how often I have been in love . . . with no one, with an ideal, with the one I dream of in my sleep.”– Fyodor Dostoevsky, White Nights

In Quatre nuits d’un rêveur (1971), Robert Bresson transposes Dostoevsky’s White Nights to modern Paris, where a solitary dreamer forms a fragile bond with a heartbroken young woman over four nocturnal encounters. Through Bresson’s restrained performances and luminous night imagery, the film captures the ache of unfulfilled longing and fleeting connection—a tender meditation on love’s illusions and the loneliness of idealists in an indifferent world. Now shown in a newly restored 4K edition.
